The carpet not only complements the arrangement, but also can change it and give it a cozy character. By the way, it is also a pleasant place to sit or play with a child. In addition, it is great for keeping heat in the room and protecting the floor from scratches. However, are you wondering how big the ideal carpet should be? Below you will find the necessary information. Read them and you will get rid of your doubts!
In a moment we will discuss some ways to choose the size of a carpet for a room, but first we will explain why this issue is important at all. First of all, a rug that is too large can overwhelm the interior and make it seem visually smaller. There is also a risk that the carpet will look more like a carpet.
On the other hand, a too-small carpet curls up when moving chairs or an armchair, is easy to trip over, which promotes dangerous falls, and often looks quite shabby.
We can also put a rug on both sides of the bed to keep our feet warm every morning. It can also serve as a comfortable place to play with a child, or to visually separate different zones in a room, such as separating the lounge area from the dining area.
In the living room, the carpet is usually laid in the lounge area. Sometimes it’s a couch and a coffee table, other times a corner sofa, others a couch plus armchairs, less often armchairs alone. One rule of thumb is that the carpet should be under the entire coffee table and at least under two legs of the sofa, corner or armchairs. In turn, it looks best when it slightly overhangs all this furniture. Do not allow a small rug only under the coffee table.
In the dining room, it should stick out about 60 centimeters on each side. It’s important that all chairs stand entirely on the rug – we’re mainly looking at the comfort of the people at the table – we’re concerned that there should be no difference in friction between the chair legs on the floor, and that the chairs should stand exactly at the same level. 60 centimeters will also allow you to comfortably move the chairs back and forth without the risk of snagging on the lying carpet. So, if our table is 120×80 cm, then choose a 240×200 cm rug.
On the other hand, if you decide on a carpet that takes up almost the entire floor, for example, of a child’s room, consider the door. When they open inward, then we must either choose a slightly smaller carpet, or cut it in such a way that the door leaf does not hook on it in any case. Otherwise, the carpet will make it difficult to open and close the door. It is best to use the first solution, that is, to choose a carpet that will give about 90 centimeters of free space on all four sides. This will maintain the right symmetry in the room.
And you, what kind of carpet will you decide on? Remember that there are plenty of designs and colors to choose from, which you also need to match with your interior design. We wish you the best of luck!
