Eclectic kitchen – furniture, decoration and fittings

Achieving an original effect in interior design is possible by using seemingly mutually exclusive elements. Just combine accessories and furniture that contrast with each other to get an effect straight from the covers of interior magazines. Here are some proven tips for an eclectic kitchen.

Eclectic interiors are primarily a great combination of elements that, although at first glance seem mismatched, but after placing them in one room create an interesting whole. Interiors maintained in this style reflect the character of the household members. Grandma’s souvenirs, an old cuckoo clock, a retro dresser or interesting frames are things we have a fondness for. They are the heart of eclectic style.

What is eclecticism?

Before we start decorating our kitchen in the eclectic spirit, we should learn the meaning of this term. It’s a story about contrasts, combining different styles, creating unusual combinations. Luxurious interior and raw elements, flashy combinations with modest ones are a hit

It is worth to combine e.g. an old styled kitchen with modern cabinets, a wooden table with plastic chairs. A modern kitchen with vintage-style accessories will look great. You can go crazy with patterns and forms.

Aurea Mediocritas, or the golden mean

There is a main principle that governs eclecticism – you need to find a balance between different elements. There are many things that bring contrasting styles together

A kitchen decorated in New York style will be perfectly complemented by Moroccan dishes – jugs or cups. An industrial kitchen, on the other hand, will be enlivened with delicate textures and soft accessories. However, it is worth remembering not to overdo it, e.g. combination of floral sofa with wallpaper in animal patterns will look strange and in the long run may even annoy

It is easier to combine accessories, if walls and ceilings are kept in neutral colors, so they do not clash with the unobvious interior. To achieve the effect of pure harmony, it is worth following the rule of similar color tonality, which imposes the choice of accessories.

This is the key to eclectic style – repeating a color, structure or motif several times e.g. in the kitchen, which will give coherence to the arrangement.

What about this kitchen?

In the kitchen, eclectic style can be introduced by combining glossy modern cabinets with wooden, raw countertops, in addition wood in the same tone can be used to create a table. How to break all this? I chair! It’s best if each one is different, to which we add colorful accessories, and the kitchen is ready in an original style.

Eclectic furniture can also be purchased at antique markets. In Germany, these types of interior elements were produced between 1850 and 1910, and it is from them that architects around the world draw inspiration.

Proportion is important

For an easy way to create an eclectic whole, it’s a good idea to follow the 80-20% rule. What does this mean? You should choose two styles that you want to combine, and the leading one, and just according to this proportion combine all accessories and furniture.

Here are the most interesting combinations:

  • scandinavian style and boho,
  • industrial style and boho,
  • provencal style with elements of shabby chic,
  • industrial style and vintage.

According to specialists, you should limit yourself to a maximum of three styles, such an amount will ensure that the arrangement will not be overdone.

An important skill – combining patterns

If you decide to decorate your interior in an eclectic style, the ability to combine patterns is key. It is worth combining consistent patterns in different colors. You should choose the theme of the room, which will make it, despite the different colors, will create a whole. An interior decorated in such a style will be attractive and fresh.

Remember to maintain balance when decorating an eclectic kitchen. Exaggeration in the number of motifs is not advisable. This is the key to beautiful interiors in this original style.
